Creative fatigue is the decline in performance of an advertising asset as the same users see it repeatedly. On Meta, efficiency drops sharply after roughly four exposures to the same creative. Fatigue is why creative volume, rather than creative quality, is usually the binding constraint on a scaling account.
In practice
Fatigue is why creative volume is an operational problem rather than a creative one. An account running four assets a month against a large audience will exhaust them; an account running twenty will not. Nothing about the second account's creative is better - there is simply more of it, which is the only defence against frequency that an advertiser fully controls.
Signs of creative fatigue
| Signal | Working threshold |
|---|---|
| Frequency on the ad set | Above 3 to 4 over 7 days on a prospecting audience |
| Click-through rate | Down 20% or more versus the asset's first week |
| Cost per result | Up 20% or more with stable budget and audience |
| Hook rate | Falling week on week on the same asset |
How to fix creative fatigue
Refresh the opening first: a new hook on an existing body restores most of the lost performance at a fraction of the cost of a new film. Rotate formats (product page film, UGC style story, static) so the same audience meets the product in different shapes. Plan creative volume ahead of spend: an account scaling budget needs new assets every week, not every quarter.
FAQ
How fast does creative fatigue set in?
On a large prospecting audience, usually within two to four weeks. On a small retargeting audience, it can set in within days because frequency climbs faster.
How many creatives should an account run?
Enough that frequency per asset stays below roughly four per week. In practice that means several new assets each week for an account spending meaningful budget on Meta or TikTok.
